The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, will personally take part in the upcoming summit of the heads of state of the North Atlantic Alliance, which will be held in the Turkish capital on July 7 and 8 this year. This was officially announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his speech before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. According to the head of the American foreign ministry, the upcoming meeting of the bloc’s thirty-two member states will become the most important event in the modern history of the defense alliance, as the agenda includes key issues of reforming the alliance’s internal structure and reviewing mutual obligations.

Washington has confirmed its commitment to membership in the defense organization, but the American leadership openly insists on the need for radical changes in the principles of allocating financial and military expenditures. Preparations for the U.S. leader’s visit are taking place amid serious disagreements between the United States and a number of European allies that have refused to support Washington’s military operations in the Middle East. The American administration expresses open dissatisfaction with the fact that some alliance members are blocking the use of their military bases for the needs of the U.S. Army, prompting the White House to publicly question the effectiveness of the current alliance mechanisms.

The Turkish side, acting as the host, has already begun implementing large-scale security measures in the summit area and preparing the government complex in Ankara to receive top officials. Local diplomatic circles note that Donald Trump’s personal presence turns the Ankara meeting into a critical turning point for the future of European security as a whole, where European leaders will have to face sharp criticism over insufficient funding of their own defense budgets. At the same time, for Ankara, this summit offers a unique opportunity to strengthen its position as the main geopolitical mediator amid fragmentation and high tension in the Middle Eastern region.
