Girne Administration cancels music and event permits until further notice
The Girne District Administration has cancelled previously issued permits for holding events and broadcasting music. The ban remains in effect until further notice and was introduced as part of the national mourning declared after a vessel sank off the coast of Girne.
The restriction applies throughout the district. Music must not be played in residential buildings, businesses, restaurants, cafés, bars, entertainment venues and other similar places. The only exception is weddings held in wedding halls.
The administration asked the relevant agencies and departments to ensure compliance with the ban and carry out the necessary inspections.
Earlier, the TRNC Ministry of Tourism and Environment suspended all music permits across the country for the duration of the national mourning period from August 31 to September 2. The ministry warned that establishments that continued to play music would face measures under Environmental Law No. 18/2012.
The mourning was declared by the Council of Ministers after a passenger catamaran sailing on the Girne–Taşucu route sank off the coast of Girne. On the same day, the Famagusta Municipality cancelled the remaining events of GABFEST 2026, which was scheduled to continue until October 3.
