An Israeli couple and their three-year-old child were travelling from Larnaca to Girne, but due to a routing error, the vehicle ended up in a first-degree military restricted zone near the village of Gaziler. The taxi driver and two passengers were detained.

According to police, at around 03:30 on 1 August, a Bulgarian national, taxi driver M.D., picked up the family at Larnaca Airport and was taking them to a hotel in Girne.

The driver entered «Girne» as the destination in the navigation app, but the selected route passed through the Gaziler area, where the vehicle ended up near the boundary of the military restricted zone. Military personnel spotted the car and detained the driver and passengers as they attempted to enter the territory of the TRNC.

Police said the investigation is continuing: the detainees’ statements will be checked and surveillance camera footage will be examined.

The Israeli couple told the court that the driver had got lost and that they had not committed any offence.

The court extended the detention of the suspects by a further three days.
