North Cyprus Infants Poisoned with Alcohol Now Receiving Oral Feeding
The Ministry of Health in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has issued an update on the condition of six infants who survived after alcohol was allegedly mixed into their food in the neonatal intensive care unit at Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Nicosia.
According to the Ministry’s statement, all six infants are showing signs of improvement, with doctors noting positive progress in their recovery.
“As of yesterday, the infants have begun receiving oral feeding, marking a significant step forward in their treatment. Their health continues to improve steadily,” the statement read.
To recap, the incident occurred over the past weekend in the neonatal intensive care unit at Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, where seven infants suddenly became unwell. Sadly, one of the infants could not be saved.
One of the affected children, 20-day-old Mihrimah Toymuradova, was being treated in an incubator due to premature birth.
Following the infant's death, an investigation was immediately launched, and the medical staff on duty were suspended. During the ongoing investigation, five healthcare workers were arrested and charged with "Failure to Take Precautionary Measures" and "Negligence." Police disclosed that ethyl alcohol was found to have been mixed into the infants' food.
A five-liter bottle containing water mixed with ethyl alcohol was seized from the area where the suspects worked.
The court has ordered the suspects to remain in custody as the investigation proceeds.
