EL-SEN President Raises Concerns Over Toxic Smoke Impacting the Entire Iskele Region
The President of the Cyprus and Turkey Electric Utility Workers Union (EL-SEN) has expressed serious concerns about the toxic smoke being released by the AKSA Kalecik power plant. The entire Iskele region, along with nearby villages, is suffering from air pollution as a result.
Ahmet Tugcu, the union president, took to social media to share photographs of the toxic fumes being emitted from AKSA Kalecik.
"Where is AKSA sourcing this fuel from? When was the last time they were fined for failing to install proper filters? Who inspects and analyzes the fuel supply, and where exactly is it coming from?" Tugcu asked. He also noted that "AKSA's installed capacity is 175 megawatts, but its maximum output is only 140 megawatts."
Previously, there were reports of black smoke rising again from the Teknecik Power Plant in Northern Cyprus.
A video, clearly showing thick columns of smoke billowing from two towers, was sent to us by a concerned local resident. The last time something like this was observed was in late August, when it raised significant health concerns among nearby residents. After that, power outages became more frequent across the island.
In response, experts were sent from Turkey to the TRNC to repair a malfunctioning generator at Teknecik.
