Employers Challenge New Minimum Wage in the TRNC: Commission to Meet on Sunday
The employers' side in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has challenged the recent decision regarding the new minimum wage. As a result, the Minimum Wage Determination Commission will convene again on Sunday, September 29, to review the objections.
The Turkish Cypriot Employers’ Union expressed opposition to the newly set minimum wage, which was announced last week.
On September 18, the Minimum Wage Determination Commission set the minimum wage at 35,180 Turkish liras net and 40,436 Turkish liras gross. Employers did not attend the meeting, arguing that the increase in the minimum wage reduces the competitiveness of businesses.
Following the publication of the decision in the "Official Gazette," a 10-day period for submitting objections began, which is set to expire tomorrow.
After this period ends, the Minimum Wage Determination Commission will meet again at the request of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to evaluate the submitted objections.
Sadık Gardiyanoğlu, the Minister of Labor and Social Security, announced that he will contact all concerned parties tomorrow, and the next meeting is likely to take place on Sunday, September 29.
