Fire roundup in Northern Cyprus: outbreaks recorded in five districts
On the last day of the holidays, TRNC fire brigades, together with the Forestry Department and municipal services, worked in an intensified mode to extinguish fires at five different points across the island. The incidents were caused by both human-related factors and weather conditions.
In the Esentepe area, near the Antiphonitis Church, a forest fire broke out, destroying about one acre of shrubs and two pine trees. On the Bostancı — Taşpınar road, sparks from a faulty electrical transformer ignited dry grass, as a result of which the fire destroyed two acres of an unharvested barley field. In Mehmetçik, a fire at a municipal landfill reignited due to strong winds, with flames engulfing three acres of territory with waste and old car tires.
Two more incidents were related to machinery and the residential sector. In Gönyeli, a fire broke out in the garage of an empty house, damaging the items stored there. And on the highway between Geçitkale and Mallıdağ, a tractor-mounted baler completely burned down while in motion due to overheated bearings. In all cases, the fires were localized, and soil cooling work continues at the site of the forest fire in Esentepe.
