Main fiber-optic cable damaged by construction work in Gönyeli
A major disruption to telecommunications networks has been recorded in the municipality of Gönyeli due to physical damage to infrastructure. During unauthorized excavation work carried out by a private developer, construction equipment completely severed the main fiber-optic cable (backbone line) providing high-speed internet and telephone service to the city’s central and residential areas.
Emergency crews from the Telecommunications Department (Telekomünikasyon Dairesi) arrived at the scene promptly. Department specialists began dismantling the damaged section and laying a new cable route, but due to the high technical complexity of the fiber-optic splicing process, restoration work will take considerable time. Local authorities have already initiated legal proceedings against the construction company that committed a serious violation of the rules for excavation work near critical communications nodes. Users are being warned of possible service interruptions in the coming hours.
