Road Renaming in Paphos Suspended After UN Intervention

The Municipal Council of Paphos has decided to temporarily suspend the process of renaming the street named after Kemal Atatürk, located in the traditional Turkish Cypriot quarter of the city, Moutallos. Local authorities had previously planned to change the street’s name to “Stelios Kyriakides” in honor of the famous Cypriot marathon runner. However, the initiative triggered a strong political backlash, harsh criticism from the leadership of Northern Cyprus, and prompted diplomatic intervention by the United Nations.

Representatives of the United Nations in Cyprus expressed deep concern over the plans of the Paphos municipal authorities, noting that such unilateral actions regarding objects of the Turkish Cypriot community’s cultural and historical heritage could seriously undermine efforts to build trust between the two parts of the island. In this regard, international observers strongly recommended suspending the implementation of the decision until comprehensive consultations are held and the emerging disagreements are resolved.

Against the backdrop of growing diplomatic pressure, the mayor of Paphos confirmed that the issue of changing the street’s name has been formally frozen and removed from the current agenda for additional legal and political assessments. Local commentators note that preserving historical place names in Turkish Cypriot areas in the south of the island remains an extremely sensitive issue, and any attempts to change them require coordination at the highest intercommunal level to prevent further escalation of tensions.
