Living with parents after 25 is no longer seen as a sign of failure

A few years ago, living with parents after the age of 25 was often seen as a symbol of being unable to stand on one’s own feet. Today, that perception is changing rapidly. High housing prices, expensive rents, rising mortgage rates and the overall cost of living are forcing millions of young people to rethink long-held ideas about adulthood.

Experts note that living with parents is increasingly seen not as a step backward, but as a sensible financial strategy.

Almost half of young Americans live with their parents

According to a study by the US Federal Reserve, in 2025 about 49% of Americans under 30 were living with their parents. Nearly a third of them were over 25.

The reason is not a lack of work. Most young people who continue living at home have steady jobs and income. The main problem is housing affordability.

High property prices, rapidly rising rents and expensive mortgage loans make independent living too costly even for people with stable salaries.

According to Realtor.com, 2025 saw a historic record in the US: 25.2 million people under 35 were living with their parents. That is even more than during the COVID-19 pandemic. About 70% of them are employed.

Living at home means saving for the future

Economists note that living together allows young people to significantly reduce their monthly expenses.

By giving up rent, many direct the money they save toward building a financial cushion, investing, paying off student loans or saving for a down payment on a home of their own.

According to surveys, most members of Gen Z no longer see moving back in with their parents as a sign of failure in life. On the contrary, many see it as a rational way to achieve financial independence faster.

Social media has turned living with parents into trendy content

Unexpectedly, the trend has also taken off online.

On TikTok, Instagram and other social networks, videos are growing in popularity in which adult children show everyday life with their parents: shared dinners, domestic disputes, family traditions and funny situations.

Such content draws millions of views, and some creators successfully monetize it through advertising and partnership projects. Living together is no longer a subject of ridicule and is becoming part of modern family culture.

Architects are already changing house designs

Construction companies have also noticed the changes.

More and more developers are designing homes with separate living blocks or additional accessory dwelling units (Accessory Dwelling Units), allowing adult children to live near their parents while preserving their personal space.

Such projects make it possible to combine the benefits of living together and independence: families help one another while not feeling constant intrusion into their private lives.

Parents benefit too

Experts note that both sides benefit.

Parents can count on help around the house, sharing utility costs and closer communication with their children. For young people, it is an opportunity to significantly cut expenses and accumulate capital.

At the same time, specialists stress that the success of this arrangement depends on заранее agreed rules: division of responsibilities, respect for personal boundaries and financial transparency.

A new model of growing up

Sociologists believe the traditional “university — separate apartment — own home” pattern is gradually giving way to a more flexible model.

At the same time, most young people do not see living with their parents as a permanent solution. For many, it is a temporary stage that allows them to build a solid financial foundation before buying their own home or starting a family.

Experts agree that if living with parents after 25 used to be considered a sign of delayed adulthood, today it is increasingly becoming a sign of financial literacy and a pragmatic approach to the future.
