What Agios Mamas is like
Agios Mamas is located in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains in the Limassol district, at an altitude of about 500 m above sea level. It is not a tourist resort or a museum village: local residents still live here, vineyards and agricultural land surround it, and winemaking traditions remain part of local life.
The village is part of the famous Commandaria region — a group of mountain villages where Xynisteri and Mavro grapes have traditionally been grown to produce the historic sweet wine. That is why a visit in autumn is especially fitting: the grape season is associated not only with wine, but also with making palouze, soutzoukos and other traditional products.
The village takes its name from Saint Mamas — Agios Mamas (Άγιος Μάμας). This saint is especially revered in Cyprus and is traditionally considered the patron saint of shepherds and domestic animals.
The village’s main church is dedicated to Saint Mamas, and over time his name also became the name of the settlement itself.
History of the village
The history of Agios Mamas is closely connected with the agriculture of mountain Cyprus. For generations, grapes, wine and grape-juice products have been an important part of the local economy.
The village’s location within the Commandaria region was particularly significant. The production of this wine is associated with a specific area on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, and Agios Mamas is one of the region’s traditional villages.
That is why the best way to understand the village’s history is not through a single major monument, but during a walk: the stone buildings, church, old agricultural objects, vineyards and winery together tell you much more about life in the settlement than any one attraction.
Agios Mamas and Commandaria
Commandaria is a sweet dessert wine made from the local Xynisteri and Mavro grape varieties. After harvesting, the grapes are left in the sun so that the berries lose some of their moisture and their sugar content naturally increases. The grapes are then pressed and the winemaking process begins.
The name Commandaria is associated with the medieval period and the holdings of the Knights Hospitaller — the Grand Commandery. Over time, the name of the territory also became the name of the wine produced there.
Today, Commandaria has a protected designation of origin, so wine can be produced under this name only from specified grapes and in a defined area of the Republic of Cyprus. Agios Mamas is part of this area.
But in autumn, grapes here are turned into more than just wine. Fresh grape juice is used to make palouze — a thick dessert — as well as soutzoukos: nuts strung on a thread are repeatedly dipped in thickened grape juice and then dried.
Revecca Winery

One reason to combine a walk around Agios Mamas with a wine-themed visit is the local Revecca Winery. This small family winery works with Cypriot grape varieties and also produces Commandaria.
Its Commandaria Revecca won a gold award at the Cyprus Wine Competition in 2024. So it is interesting to taste not just sweet Cypriot wine in general, but Commandaria made right in the area where the grapes for its production are grown.
It is best to visit the winery by prior arrangement, especially if your trip does not coincide with the festival or another village event.

Church of Saint Mamas
The village’s main church is dedicated to Saint Mamas. It is located in the centre of Agios Mamas and remains an active place of worship.
During festival events, the church becomes one of the places where visitors can get to know the village. You can see icons and church objects connected with the local religious tradition.
As this is an active church, visitors should be mindful of services and observe the appropriate dress and conduct.
Location
What else to see in the village
Agios Mamas has a small ethnographic museum with objects connected with village life and agriculture in the past. It is not a large museum complex, so it is best viewed as an addition to a walk around the village.
The village itself is the main attraction. It is worth walking along the old streets, looking at the traditional houses and heading to the areas with views of the surrounding hills and vineyards.
Agios Mamas is not the kind of village where you need to rush from one attraction to another. Its appeal lies precisely in its small scale, rural atmosphere and connection with the region’s winemaking tradition.
Commandaria and palouze festival 2026
On 4 October 2026, the Commandaria and palouze festival will take place in Agios Mamas — one of the best days of the year to get to know the village for the first time.
The programme is scheduled to begin at 11:00. During the day, visitors can watch palouze and soutzoukos being made, taste Commandaria and other local products, and discover traditional crafts and music.
During the festival, visitors can also explore the Church of Saint Mamas, the ethnographic exhibition and the local winery. This makes the festival more than just a food fair: it becomes a full day of discovering the village and its winemaking traditions.
Admission to the festival is free.
If the purpose of your trip is specifically to explore Commandaria, you can extend your route to other villages in the region in October. A separate two-day Commandaria & Tradition Festival will take place in Kalo Chorio on 17–18 October 2026.
Where to eat
Agios Mamas is a small village, so the choice of restaurants within the village itself is limited. On the day of the festival, however, the situation is quite different: stalls appear selling traditional products, baked goods, palouze, soutzoukos and other dishes.
If you would like a full tavern lunch, it is convenient to combine the trip with a visit to neighbouring villages in the region. Kalo Chorio, Laneia and other settlements in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains are a short drive away, and offer a wider choice of traditional taverns.
For this kind of trip, it is best not to build the day around one particular restaurant: arrive in Agios Mamas in the morning, visit the winery and festival, then choose somewhere to have lunch along the way in one of the neighbouring villages.
Where to stay overnight
Agios Mamas itself is not a major agritourism centre, so there is little accommodation in the village. If you would like to spend the night in the mountains, it is more convenient to look at traditional guesthouses and small hotels in neighbouring villages.
Laneia is especially interesting — one of the most photogenic wine villages in the Limassol district. You can combine an overnight stay with an evening walk along its stone streets, then continue your route through the wine region the next day.
Another option is Platres, if you would like more hotel amenities, restaurants and a full-fledged mountain resort. This is a convenient choice for a weekend trip that includes visits to several Troodos villages.
What to see nearby
A trip to Agios Mamas can easily be turned into a short route through the wine villages.
Laneia
Laneia is known for its traditional stone streets, old wine press, history of Commandaria production, workshops and small courtyards. The village is ideal for a walk and taking photographs.
Kalo Chorio
Another village in the historic Commandaria region. It is particularly interesting to visit on 17–18 October 2026, when the two-day Commandaria & Tradition Festival takes place.
Doros
A small traditional village that is easy to include in a driving route through the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. It also retains its connection with grape-growing and Commandaria production.
Platres and Troodos
If you would like to continue your day in the mountains, you can head higher from the wine region towards Platres and Troodos. This route is especially pleasant in autumn, thanks to the cooler weather and the changing colours of the mountain vegetation.
How to plan your trip
A few hours are enough for a regular visit to the village itself. Add Revecca Winery and lunch, and you have a full half-day trip.
On the festival day, 4 October, it is best not to rush and to set aside most of the day for Agios Mamas. After the festival, you can continue your route through Laneia or stay overnight in one of the mountain villages.
A car is much more convenient than public transport for this kind of route: the region’s main points of interest are spread across different small villages.
If you are planning a route to see the main attractions of the Republic of Cyprus and want to get around without relying on taxis, it is convenient to compare car rental options in advance through Localrent. It is also worth planning the basic practical details in advance. You can arrange travel medical insurance before departure, for example through Tripinsurance, and for navigation and connectivity on the road, you can set up a travel eSIM in advance, for example through Drimsim.
