The history of Agros

The modern village emerged near the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Agros, founded by Byzantine monks. Over time, a settlement developed around the monastery, gradually becoming one of the largest mountain communities in the Pitsilia region.

For many centuries, the residents were engaged in agriculture and grew fruit, grapes and roses. Today, Agros remains one of the best-known centres of traditional production in Cyprus.

The village of roses

Panagia Eleousa Church

The correct modern name is Panagia Eleousa Church. This is the name under which the church appears on maps and in tourist information about Agros.

The church was built on the site of the former Megalos Agros Monastery, which is closely connected with the origins of the village. The old monastery was dismantled at the end of the 19th century, and the present church was erected in its place. For this reason, the name "Monastery of Our Lady of Agros" is no longer used for the current landmark, as it is now known as Panagia Eleousa Church.
