Xyliatos Reservoir

The village’s main attraction is Xyliatos Dam. It is surrounded by dense pine forests, which make it slightly cooler here than in the cities and along the coast.

The lake is artificial and was created to store water, but over time it became one of the most picturesque places in the central Troodos region. Xyliatos Reservoir is surrounded on all sides by dense forests of Cypriot black pine (Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana). In calm weather, the mountains and pine trees are reflected in the water, creating beautiful panoramas. These trees are considered one of the symbols of Troodos and create a special microclimate that keeps walks here comfortable even on the hottest summer days. In spring, the forest fills with the scent of pine needles and flowering grasses, while in autumn it becomes a popular place for walks and mushroom picking.

A large recreation area, Xyliatos Dam Picnic Site, is located nearby. It has tables, benches, shelters, picnic preparation areas and places to relax. After reconstruction, the site can accommodate approximately 600 visitors and is considered one of the largest picnic areas in the mountains of Cyprus.

The best-known route runs around the reservoir.

The trail passes through pine forest, crosses several small wooden bridges and leads to viewpoints overlooking the lake. The route is suitable for almost everyone and is considered one of the most accessible in Troodos.

In addition to the circular route around the dam, another short nature trail approximately 2 km long runs near the village. It passes through pine forest and connects several historic sites in the village.

Ancient Olive Trees

One of Xyliatos’s most unusual attractions is its protected olive trees.

The best-known olive tree grows in the Potima area. It is estimated to be approximately 1,700 years old, making it one of the oldest trees not only in Cyprus but also throughout the Mediterranean.

The circumference of its largest trunk reaches approximately 13 metres, while its height is about 6 metres.

Several other trees more than 500 and 800 years old are also located nearby and are protected by the Forestry Department of the Republic of Cyprus.

Memi Mine Lake

Another unusual attraction is located very close to the village — Memi Mine Lake.

Today it is a picturesque lake, but originally this was an open-pit copper mine. After mining ended, the pit gradually filled with water.

The deep water and mineral composition give the lake a rich dark blue colour, making it one of the most unusual natural and man-made attractions in the Republic of Cyprus.

Swimming is not recommended here — people mainly visit the site for its beautiful views and photographs.
