Kremiotis Waterfall - a hidden natural gem

In summer, most tourists try to spend their time either by the sea or in the cool Troodos Mountains. However, the Republic of Cyprus has another place where you can feel the coolness even during the hottest months: Kremiotis Waterfall. It is located near the village of Kritou Terra between Paphos and Latchi and remains one of the island’s least-known natural spots.

Unlike the popular waterfalls of Troodos, this place is rarely crowded. It is an excellent spot for a peaceful walk, beautiful photographs and a short trip through the western part of Cyprus.

The waterfall is located near the traditional village of Kritou Terra, approximately a 20-minute drive from Polis and Latchi. You can only get here by car, after which you need to follow an equipped nature trail.

The route is considered easy and is suitable for most travellers. The walk from the car park to the waterfall takes about 15–20 minutes.

Naturally, after a prolonged drought, there is less water, but the waterfall dries up completely much less often than many of the island’s seasonal waterfalls.

What the route is like

A scenic trail through dense vegetation leads to the waterfall. Along the way, you will find wooden bridges, steps, small streams and shady sections of forest.

Even in hot weather, it is noticeably cooler here thanks to the high humidity, the shade of the trees and the constant movement of the water.

Comfortable sports shoes are recommended for the walk, as some sections may be wet and slippery.

What makes Kremiotis interesting

The waterfall has an unusual formation. The water passes through a natural rock cavity, creating a small natural tunnel, and then falls down in a second cascade. This makes the place look unusual and distinguishes it considerably from most other waterfalls in the Republic of Cyprus.

The natural pool at the foot of the waterfall is particularly striking. Thanks to the clear water and the pale limestone bottom, it takes on a rich turquoise hue, which is why this place is often called one of the most photogenic natural spots in western Cyprus. On hot summer days, many travellers step into the pool to cool off, although the water remains quite cool even at the height of the season.

At one time, the water flow was so powerful that two watermills operated nearby, where local residents ground grain. Today, only a few separate elements remain, recalling the history of this place.

Because of the abundant greenery and constant moisture around the waterfall, a small natural oasis has formed, where even in summer you can encounter many birds and insects.
