76-year-old man killed on Limassol–Paphos motorway while clearing a fallen refrigerator from the road

A 76-year-old man was killed on the Limassol–Paphos motorway on Wednesday. He got out of his car to remove a refrigerator that had fallen onto the road, and was struck by a passing minibus. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police of the British Bases, where the accident occurred, said.

According to police, the man was travelling with his grandson. The refrigerator he was transporting fell onto the motorway. The driver reversed towards the fallen load, got out of the vehicle and was struck at that moment. The grandson was not injured, and there was no collision between the two vehicles.

The section of the motorway after the tunnel in the direction of Paphos was closed immediately after the accident, and remained closed until midday. Drivers were asked to exit onto the old Limassol–Paphos road at the Kantou and Erimi junctions and rejoin the motorway at Avdimou. Cyprus Police assisted with traffic control at the scene.

British Bases police are investigating the circumstances of the accident and are asking anyone who witnessed what happened, as well as anyone who has dashcam footage recorded on this section of road at the time of the accident, to contact them.
