BMW released augmented reality glasses for motorcyclists: the road turns into Need for Speed

BMW Motorrad has unveiled the ConnectedRide Smartglasses, smart glasses that display key information directly in front of the motorcyclist’s eyes. Instead of being distracted by the instrument panel, the rider sees speed, navigation and other data right in the field of view — almost like in the computer game Need for Speed.

The glasses work on the Head-Up Display (HUD) principle. After connecting to a smartphone via the BMW Motorrad Connected app and a compatible BMW motorcycle via Bluetooth, they show the current speed, speed limit, selected gear and step-by-step navigation. The position of the virtual screen can be adjusted to suit the user, and it can be completely turned off if needed.

The developers claim that this solution makes it necessary to look down at the instrument panel less often, which means better control of the traffic situation and improved road safety. That is why the information is displayed so as not to block the view of the road.

The ConnectedRide Smartglasses feature a battery that lasts for about 10 hours of continuous use. The package includes clear and tinted UV-protective lenses, and for people with poor vision there is an adapter for prescription lenses. The glasses come in two sizes and are designed to fit under most modern motorcycle helmets.

It is important to note that the accessory is not universal. Its full potential can only be unlocked when used with a compatible BMW motorcycle with the Connectivity system and the brand’s mobile app.

Although the technology itself was first presented by BMW back in 2023, it remains one of the most unusual accessories for motorcyclists. In essence, the company has brought an automotive heads-up display into the form of ordinary glasses, bringing motorcycle riding closer to what used to be seen only in science fiction films or racing video games.
