Cyprus may establish direct air links with India. In New Delhi, Cyprus Transport, Communications and Works Minister Alexis Vafeadis held talks with representatives of two major Indian airlines — Air India and Air Indigo — on opening direct flights between the two countries.

According to KYPE sources, both companies initially expressed interest in routes to Cyprus, but final decisions will depend on further developments in the regional situation and market conditions.

As part of the visit, Alexis Vafeadis separately met with representatives of Air India, including GSA Relations and Management Head Rajinder Nath and Deputy Vice President for International Relations Ashish Ballu. Talks also took place with Air Indigo management led by acting CEO R.K. Singh.

According to available information, Air Indigo showed the most active interest in the Cyprus route. The company has already asked the Indian authorities to review the current aviation agreement in order to gain the right to operate flights to and from Cyprus.

The issue of direct air connectivity was also discussed at a meeting between Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to sources, the Indian leader positively assessed the prospects for strengthening transport ties between the two countries.

The launch of direct flights could become an important step for the development of tourism, business and investment cooperation between Cyprus and India, especially amid the strengthening of bilateral relations and the expansion of economic contacts.
