HISTORICAL BASTION IN FAMAGUSTA FULLY RESTORED
According to the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, maintenance work on the Kanbulat Bastion in Famagusta has been completed. During the event dedicated to the project's completion, officials emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the context of the island's reunification.
Mario Nava, the Director-General for Structural Reform Support at the European Commission, stated that Cyprus's cultural heritage holds exceptional significance.
Preserving cultural monuments is a collective responsibility. The significance of restoring and maintaining these monuments goes beyond their historical value; it serves as a tool for the reunification of communities and the strengthening of trust," noted the official.
Expressing gratitude to all involved in the restoration, the Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Jahongir Haidarov, emphasized that the completion of restoration work highlights the timeless cultural wealth of Famagusta, in line with the fundamental principles of the United Nations.
Additionally, event participants tested virtual reality technology, allowing them to explore various cultural heritage objects in Cyprus using advanced information technologies.
The work was fully financed by the European Union (EU) and carried out by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Part of the work included replacing stones, reconstructing the collapsed retaining wall and the collapsed part of the northeast platform, strengthening the south curtain wall with rubble stone, and removing vegetation from the stone walls.
