Red fire danger level declared in Cyprus
The Department of Forests of the Republic of Cyprus has declared a red fire danger level for July 21 due to the extremely high risk of forest fires.
The decision was made after a major fire in the Pyrgi area, where the flames came dangerously close to residential buildings. The “Lightning” emergency response plan, aerial resources and volunteers from the Blue Heart Foundation were deployed to tackle the blaze.
The authorities remind the public that lighting fires in forests and rural areas is prohibited by law.
From May to October, violations are punishable by a fine of up to €2,500. If the case is heard in court, the penalty may reach up to five years in prison or a fine of up to €25,000.
If a fire occurs in a state forest or within a two-kilometre zone around it, the maximum penalty increases to 12 years in prison and a fine of up to €100,000.
The burning of dry grass, branches and rubbish also remains prohibited, while from June 1 to September 30, work involving open flames or the production of sparks may not be carried out without special permission.
