The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus are introducing emergency strict measures to prevent the introduction and spread of foot-and-mouth disease in the territory of government-controlled areas. Under the new approved regulation, in the event of detection or reasonable suspicion of an outbreak, all infected livestock and animals that have been in contact with it on a farm must be culled and disposed of within 24 hours.

This strict measure is aimed at protecting the country's livestock sector and preserving Cyprus' status as a foot-and-mouth-disease-free zone, which is critically important for exports of local products.

For violations of veterinary protocols, concealing symptoms of illness in animals, or the illegal import of livestock and feed, unprecedented administrative penalties have been introduced: fines for individuals and legal entities can now reach €250,000. The Veterinary Services of the Republic of Cyprus are strengthening controls at ports, farmers' markets and border areas, urging farm owners to report any suspicious symptoms in animals immediately.
