Cyprus Council of Ministers approves aid for those affected by severe weather: up to €20,000 for housing

The Cyprus Council of Ministers has approved the amounts of state financial assistance for those affected by the severe weather on 29 August. Owners of uninsured homes in which they permanently reside will be reimbursed for 80% of the assessed damage to the building, up to a maximum of €20,000, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou announced.

Damage to property and equipment in such homes will be covered in full, up to the assessed amount, but not exceeding €15,000. For an uninsured photovoltaic system installed on a permanent residence, 80% of the assessed damage will be paid, with a maximum of €7,000.

For uninsured commercial properties, the rate is lower: 70% of the assessed damage to the building, up to a maximum of €30,000, and full compensation for damage to equipment, capped at €10,000. For an uninsured vehicle, 75% of the assessed damage will be reimbursed, up to a maximum of €5,000 per vehicle.

If the property was insured, the state will cover the assessed damage only up to the deductible, that is, the portion of the loss not reimbursed by the insurance company. Assistance will be provided exclusively for buildings with a construction permit issued by the competent authority, and only for permanent legalized structures.

According to the Ministry of Interior, 183 homes were affected in Nicosia District; in Larnaca District, 12 homes, one livestock building and two cars; in Paphos District, 12 homes and one commercial property; in Limassol District, 11 homes; and in Famagusta District, two homes and a church.

Damage registration is ongoing and will end next Monday. The Ministry of Interior will publish all details of the Council of Ministers' decision and the application procedure on its website in the coming hours.
