Curious incident of the day in Paphos: a snake blocked a swimming pool drain and reminded residents of safety rules

In one of the private residential complexes in Paphos, rescuers had to clear an unusual blockage — a large snake had made its way into the pool drainage system in search of water and completely clogged the drain pipe. The reptile was successfully removed and returned to the wild, but the incident opened the season for the usual summer problems faced by owners of private homes in Cyprus. With the onset of June heat, snakes begin actively searching for sources of moisture and coolness, often choosing filtration units, pump pits and the areas around swimming pools for this purpose.

Experts remind residents that if a snake is found on a property, it is strictly forbidden to try to catch or kill it yourself. In such situations, you should isolate pets, note the reptile’s location from a safe distance and immediately call certified trapping specialists or contact the Forestry Department. To minimize risks, property owners are advised to regularly mow the grass around the pool basin, cover drainage openings with protective mesh and check skimmers before putting their hands inside.
