16 cases of storm damage registered in Limassol district, applications accepted until 7 September

The Limassol district administration registered 16 reports of damage following the bad weather on 29 August, district officer Michalis Michael said. Those affected can submit an application for damage assessment until 7 September.

Most cases involved roof damage: dislodged roof tiles, broken solar water heaters and water tanks. Two further reports concerned damaged vehicles. All cases were recorded in communities in Limassol district, with the most serious in Kantou, where the roof of a livestock building was blown off.

According to Michalis Michael, only one such case was known in the district over the weekend, while the remaining reports were submitted on Monday and Tuesday.

Two departments are assessing the damage. Damage to building structures is handled by the Limassol district administration, which can be contacted on 25806422 or at limassol.dao@limda.moi.gov.cy. Photovoltaic systems, plumbing installations and vehicles are referred to the Electromechanical Service.

According to the Ministry of Interior, damage has been recorded at 183 homes in 20 communities and three municipalities across Cyprus, with the highest number in Nicosia district. An application containing the applicant’s name, address, telephone number and photographs of the damage must be sent to the district administration in the applicant’s place of residence by 7 September. Cases involving the most serious damage will be considered first. The Council of Ministers will determine the final criteria and compensation amounts.

The community of Aredhiou in Nicosia district was hit hardest. Its leader, Yiannis Yiannou, reported dozens of destroyed solar panels and photovoltaic systems, a demolished workshop and three roofs blown off residential buildings; four farms were also damaged. “I am 60 years old and I have never seen anything like this: winds at force 10 and hailstones the size of eggs,” he said, calling on the state to help the affected families.
