About 2,500 bomb shelters in Cyprus — their capacity covers 45% of the population
There are about 2,500 bomb shelters in Cyprus, which can accommodate approximately 45% of the country's population. This was announced on Monday by the head of the Civil Defence Service, Maria Papa, at a joint press conference with Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou.
According to her, work to increase the number of shelters is ongoing.
One solution will be the provision of construction incentives for new residential complexes in exchange for allocating space for bomb shelters. A corresponding decree from the Ministry of Interior will be announced next week in conjunction with the Department of Town Planning.
Ioannou noted that just a few years ago, shelter capacity stood at about 30% of the population. In recent years, this figure has been increased to 45%.
The main difficulty is convincing private owners to provide premises for use as shelters.
