Drones will be launched over Cyprus highways — what will they film?

From June 8 to 18, from 09:30 to 17:00, drones will fly over sections of three Cypriot highways to collect data in the interest of the Ministry of Transport. Monitoring will affect stretches of the A1 motorway (from the Ayia Varvara/Nisou interchange to Sias), the A2 (from Ayia Varvara/Nisou to Rizoelia) and the A3 (from Rizoelia to the Livadia exit) in the Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta districts. The drones will move parallel to the roads — over slopes and outside traffic lanes, and all collected information will be processed in strict accordance with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Aerial filming is needed by the Department of Public Works to record the behavior of vehicles at interchanges, exits and lane changes, where congestion most often occurs. The resulting comprehensive picture will help calculate traffic volume, average speed and identify bottlenecks, so that in the future it will be possible to optimize road markings and traffic patterns without intervening in the road surface. The department apologized for any inconvenience and asked drivers to treat the checks with understanding.
