Nicosia Establishes 21 Feeding Stations for Stray Cats and Launches Animal Welfare Page
In Cyprus, on March 26, 2026, the Municipality of Nicosia introduced an initiative to create organized feeding stations for stray cats and a new information page, marking an event held in the capital.
As part of the project, 21 feeders have already been installed across all municipal districts, and two organized feeding points have been established — in the Pedieos river area and in Olympiados Park. Controlled and clean feeding has been introduced with the participation of volunteers, whose role is emphasized as key to the proper functioning of the stations and the well-being of the animals.
The implementation is supported by the insurance company "KOSMOS" (ΚΟΣΜΟΣ Ασφαλιστική), acting as the main sponsor. In his welcoming speech, Mayor Charalambos Prountzos noted that the initiative reflects the level of culture and responsibility of society, and caring for cats contributes to the protection of public health and the balance of the urban ecosystem. Kyriakos Tyllis, CEO and executive board member of "KOSMOS", emphasized that the treatment of animals is an indicator of civilization.
A practical demonstration of the feeders' use was conducted by the project initiator, Maria Arkoudi; children from the "Faneromeni" kindergarten took part in the presentation, highlighting the importance of fostering humane treatment from an early age. The Mayor also called on citizens to support sterilization as the primary tool for managing the stray animal population.
Simultaneously, the municipality introduced the "Nicosia Pet Friendly" initiative — a page with information on responsible ownership, adoptions, found and lost animals, and pet-friendly locations. According to the municipality, the project's goal is to create a city that respects and protects animals through cooperation between local government, the private sector, and the community.
