Father of three-year-old boy who died in Paphos allowed to travel to funeral

The Paphos District Court temporarily lifted the restrictions imposed on a 37-year-old British national accused of causing the death of his three-year-old son through negligence. The man was allowed to travel to the United Kingdom to attend the child’s funeral.

The court granted the defence application, citing humanitarian circumstances as well as the need for the accused to participate in legal proceedings as the child’s legal guardian.

The restrictions have been lifted for the period from 7 August to 14 September 2026. Two days before his departure, the man will have his travel documents returned, and the requirement to report regularly to the police will also be temporarily suspended.

As an additional measure, the court ordered him to post a cash bail of €10,000 and temporarily removed him from the list of people prohibited from leaving Cyprus for the duration of the trip.

The next court hearing is scheduled for 17 September 2026. On that day, the accused must state whether he pleads guilty.

After his return to Cyprus, from 15 September all previously imposed restrictions will come back into force: bail of €20,000, a ban on leaving the country, the surrender of all travel documents, mandatory weekly reporting to the police, a ban on crossing checkpoints and the obligation to provide the police with his residential address.

The prosecution did not object to the temporary departure but requested that the accused provide the police in advance with his address and contact details in the United Kingdom.
