Cyprus Ministry of Education to announce tenders in November for new gymnasium in Paphos

Tenders for the construction of the new Nikolaideio Gymnasium in Paphos will be announced in November. Cyprus Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou announced this at a meeting of the Parliamentary Education Committee.

The expansion procedure for Paphos’s 7th Primary School will also begin that month. The expansion was deemed necessary because of the school’s increased needs: it requires additional space for pupils and teachers.

Two further projects concern laboratory facilities. New laboratories will be equipped at Agios Charalambous Lyceum and the school’s namesake technical school. As noted at the meeting, modern curricula require facilities where pupils can gain practical skills, rather than learning theory alone.

The meeting was chaired by Democratic Party (DIKO) MP Chrysanthos Savvides, who has repeatedly raised the issue of the condition of school buildings in the Paphos district. The announcement of the tenders sets a concrete timetable; attention will now focus on compliance with procedures before construction work begins.

The ministry confirmed in July its decision to build a new gymnasium in central Paphos; by that time, the old Nikolaideio building had been demolished. The Minister of Education said that investment in school infrastructure should provide pupils and teachers with safe, modern and functional facilities.
