Popular Platania campsite in Troodos closed for major modernization
The Department of Forests of the Republic of Cyprus has officially announced the complete closure of the Platania camping site and recreation area in the Troodos Mountains due to the start of a long-awaited project for a major reconstruction and infrastructure upgrade. As of June 3, access to the campsite for tents and caravans has been fully blocked. The restrictions are being introduced for safety reasons, as heavy construction equipment will be used at the site, and extensive earthmoving and construction works will make it impossible for citizens to stay in the camp area.
During the planned works, government services intend to fully renovate the sanitary facilities, modernize the water supply and power grids, and improve the cooking areas and common recreation spaces. Special attention will be paid to raising safety standards, improving the accessibility of the infrastructure for people with disabilities, and upgrading fire suppression systems in the forest zone. The authorities emphasize that these measures are necessary to bring the popular tourist site into line with modern European environmental and sanitary standards.
The department’s management has called on local residents and tourists to show understanding regarding the temporary closure of the camp in the height of the summer season and to refrain from attempting unauthorized camping in the surrounding forests, which is strictly punishable by law. The exact completion dates for all stages of the reconstruction have not yet been announced; however, specialists will make every effort to carry out the work schedule promptly. As an alternative, holidaymakers are advised to use other officially permitted and equipped forest campsites, the list of which is available on government information resources.
