Authorities in the Turkish Republic have responded to the U.S. decision to extend the arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus for another year. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will take measures to enhance its defense capabilities.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has labeled the U.S. decision to maintain the arms embargo as a “serious mistake,” arguing that it will lead to an increase in armaments on the island and disrupt the fragile balance in the region.

“In light of the escalating activities of the Greek Cypriot administration in bolstering its armaments, we believe that the TRNC will implement all necessary measures to strengthen its defense and deterrent capabilities,” the statement from the Turkish diplomatic office emphasized.

It's important to note that the U.S. imposed an arms embargo in 1987. In 2000, Washington decided to lift these restrictions, which were reinstated in 2022 and extended again in 2023.

On Friday, the Biden administration announced its decision to extend the embargo for an additional year. This extension will take effect on October 1 and will remain in place until September 30, 2025.

This decision has sparked discontent from the Turkish Cypriot administration.

“We align with the perspective expressed in the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on this matter,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry stated.
