Cyprus National Football Team Appoints New Head Coach
On Monday, the Cyprus national football team appointed Sofronis Avgousti as their new head coach, replacing Georgian specialist Temuri Ketsbaia.
Avgousti, who previously managed first division club "Karmiotissa," has signed a two-year contract that will see him lead the team until November 2026.
His debut match as head coach will take place on October 12 in Larnaca, where Cyprus will face Romania in the UEFA Nations League. Just three days later, the team will head to Pristina for an away game against Kosovo.
The Cyprus Football Association has hailed Avgousti as "the most successful Cypriot coach in recent years."
Interestingly, Avgousti only managed "Karmiotissa" in four official matches after taking charge in July. Under his leadership, the team secured one away win, a 1-0 victory over "Enosis Neon Paralimni," and one draw, a 1-1 result against "Omonia 29M." However, they suffered two home defeats: 3-1 against "Aris Limassol" and 3-0 against "APOEL."
Avgousti has a long coaching history, having twice managed "Apollon," as well as "AEK Larnaca," and both Nicosia giants, "APOEL" and "Omonia." He has won the Cyprus Cup twice—once with "Apollon" in 2017 and again with "Omonia" in 2023.
Temuri Ketsbaia resigned from his position as head coach following a heavy 4-0 home defeat against Kosovo in the UEFA Nations League on September 9.
