126 million euros invested in Cyprus state hospitals

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus has invested 126 million euros in the modernization of public hospitals. The work is expected to be fully completed by June 2027. This was announced after a meeting between the leadership of the State Health Services Organization (OKYpY) and President Nikos Christodoulides.

The program covers all public healthcare facilities in the country. According to OKYpY representatives, some facilities are already in operation, while the rest are due to open in the coming months.

In the near future, the Makarios Hospital will launch its renovated pediatric emergency department, pediatric nephrology clinic and genetic diseases treatment center. At Limassol General Hospital, the modernization of the intensive care, hemodialysis and nephrology departments is nearing completion. At Nicosia General Hospital, new intensive care, neurology and stroke treatment units are being prepared for opening.

At the same time, the authorities continue to address overcrowding at the Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital. After several buildings were deemed unsafe and taken out of service, some patients were transferred to other facilities. Additional beds were opened in Lachi, at the Christos Stelios Ioannou Foundation, as well as in the psychiatric department of Limassol Hospital.

Despite this, the number of patients continues to rise. OKYpY explains the situation by an increase in the number of people referred for involuntary treatment by court order.

To reduce the pressure, the authorities are expanding cooperation with other medical institutions and increasing the number of psychiatric beds. In Limassol, the number of places for involuntary treatment patients has increased from eight to ten, while in the psychiatric clinic of Nicosia General Hospital, the number of places for voluntary hospitalization has been increased from 14 to 20.

The organization stressed that the construction of a new modern mental health center remains one of the priority projects. The preparation of documentation for the next stages of construction is currently being completed.
