A €21 Million “House of Arts” to Be Built in Limassol: International Architectural Competition Announced

The Limassol Municipality has announced an international architectural competition for the design of the “Limassol House of Arts” — a cultural space with a budget of more than €20 million.

The new facility will be built on Ayolou Street on a plot of land owned by the Limassol Municipality. The total cost of the project is estimated at more than €21 million.

The approximately 5,000-square-metre building will include rehearsal and performance halls, exhibition spaces, workshops, storage facilities and accommodation for visiting artists.

One of the main features will be a large black-box hall that can be transformed to host various cultural events. At least three halls of approximately 200 square metres each are also planned for music, theatre and dance projects.

The building will include an exhibition space of approximately 600 square metres, at least four guest rooms for artists, as well as a café-restaurant intended to become a meeting place for people from the creative industries.

In addition to the cultural centre itself, the project includes the construction of two underground car parks with more than 200 spaces. They will serve not only the facility but also the entire area around the city’s historic centre.

The architectural competition will be held in English in order to attract major international architectural firms. The results are expected to be announced approximately six months after the competition is held.

At the same time, the Limassol Municipality is working on the restoration of a Turkish Cypriot cinema that was completely destroyed in previous years. Following the transfer of the building to the municipality, specialists have already been selected to prepare the restoration project.

It is subsequently planned to establish a “Cinemacenter” on the site, which will become another cultural venue in the city.
