From December 5 to 7, 2025, the atmospheric low "Byron" affected Cyprus, bringing extensive and locally heavy rainfall across the island from early morning on December 7.

According to the Meteorological Service, the largest amounts of precipitation were recorded in the Paphos province. The Polis Chrysochous station registered 113.1 mm in 24 hours, which is the second highest daily December total since the station began operating in 1916. Previously, in December 1936, only a slightly higher value was recorded — 114.3 mm.

The normal monthly precipitation for December at Polis Chrysochous station is 99.8 mm (average period 1961–1990), meaning more rain fell in one day than normally expected for the entire month.

In the wider Paphos area, the Ktika station recorded 67.1 mm — the third highest December daily total since 1977. Other stations on the island recorded daily amounts ranging from 15–57 mm, confirming the wide and wet nature of the "Byron" system.

Preliminary results for the three-day period show that the heaviest rainfall occurred in the west, southwest, and mountainous areas; the average three-day total for the free areas was 35.1 mm.

In Polis Chrysochous, the monthly precipitation total by the morning of December 8 exceeded 100% and reached 126%. In other regions, this indicator varied from 25% to 40%.

The Meteorological Service notes that the rainfall on December 7 in Polis Chrysochous is clearly extreme compared to the region's climate values and significantly increased the monthly precipitation reserves, which is important for the island's water supply.
