Old Municipal Market Building in Polis to Be Demolished
The old municipal market building in Polis Chrysochous, which has been vacant and unused for many years, is set to be demolished. The proposal, put forward by Mayor Yotis Papahristofis, received unanimous approval from the municipal council.
"The old market has been abandoned for almost two decades and has become an unprofitable space for business," the mayor told Cyprus Mail.
Built in 1967, the market was once a bustling hub for traders from nearby villages when it functioned as a farmers' cooperative.
Although the municipality charged very low rent, vendors and farmers gradually stopped using the market as a place of business, particularly after the rise of supermarkets in the area.
According to the mayor, the building, which has been vacant since 2007, lacks architectural significance and has become an eyesore that detracts from the district's aesthetic.
The previous municipal council voted against demolition, and three proposals submitted at that time were rejected, with calls to replace the structure with spaces that could be rented to entertainment centers and restaurants.
The current plan is to transform the site into an extension of the open public leisure area in the town square, which is expected to attract more visitors and benefit existing businesses.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to revitalize Polis, the historical heart of the municipality, as well as the neighboring areas of Prodromi and Latsi.
