How to deal with mold and humidity in winter in Cyprus
Winters in Cyprus are mild but deceptive: temperatures rarely drop below +8 °C, yet humidity reaches 80–90%. As a result, condensation forms on windows and walls in homes and apartments, leading to mold and fungus. These problems occur even in new buildings and require timely intervention.
Why mold appears in winter
The humid climate and lack of central heating are the main causes of fungus spread in Cyprus. In most homes, walls are concrete and poorly heated, while sealed plastic windows prevent air circulation. As a result, water vapor condenses into droplets that over time become a mold hotspot.
Mold frequently appears in corners of rooms, behind cabinets, and on windows. If condensation is not addressed promptly, fungal spores multiply rapidly and release toxins, which can cause allergies and even asthma.
How to combat fungus and condensation
Special household products labeled Küf (Turkish for “mold”) are available for mold removal. Stores offer various brands that effectively eliminate fungus and prevent its recurrence.
Using them is simple, but note that all contain chlorine: wipe the affected area with a dry cloth, apply the product, leave it for a few minutes, and wipe again. After treatment, the room should be well ventilated.

Tip: when working with chemical products, wear gloves and a mask — fumes can irritate the respiratory system. In cases of severe mold infestation, it is better to temporarily leave the room after treatment.
Preventing mold growth
The main preventive measure is ventilation and humidity reduction. Use dehumidifiers or air conditioners with a dry function, open windows more frequently, especially in the morning and evening. Placing small bags of salt or activated charcoal in corners can also help absorb moisture.
You can hang a moisture absorber in a closet:

Monitor the condition of windows and walls: at the first signs of condensation, wipe it off immediately and ventilate the room. Regular cleaning and preventive treatment with antiseptics will prevent new colonies of fungus from forming.
