Canbulat Museum in Famagusta
Everyone entering Famagusta's Old Town through the port side walls passes this museum, but not everyone visits it.
Canbulat Museum
Located on the southern part of the fortress walls, to the right of the Canbulat Pasha Gate and after passing under it, is the Canbulat Museum. After the surrender of Famagusta during the Ottoman conquest, Turkish army officer Canbulat Pasha was buried in the bastion.
This small museum in the old walls surrounding Famagusta was opened in 1968. In 2008, it was rebuilt and enriched with other artifacts related to the Ottoman conquest of Famagusta.
Old battle flags surround the sarcophagus of the commander. The museum also features unique artifacts, such as samples of weapons, Turkish costumes, portraits of Ottoman generals, and documents from that era.
The Legend of Canbulat
The Ottomans had to capture the bastion, where the Venetians had installed sharp spikes in the tunnel to block the attack. During the siege of Famagusta, Ottoman hero Canbulat Bey rushed with his horse onto the siege device.
He disabled the defensive mechanism, sacrificing himself and his horse, but inspired the Ottomans to conquer the city held by the Venetians. Such dedication encouraged further conquests and led to the Ottoman Empire's victory in Famagusta.
This is a significant tomb in Cyprus and a pilgrimage site for many Turks.
