Huge excitement: the 12th “Merit Open” gathered backgammon fans from all over the world in Northern Cyprus

This year, for the 12th time, the “Merit Open” — a tournament that brings together backgammon fans from different countries in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus — is taking place. One of the country’s most prestigious hotels, Merit Park, once again hosts the largest modern backgammon championship in the world.
In cooperation with the World Backgammon Federation (WBF), the organizers launched the 12th “Merit Open” International Backgammon Championship on November 3 in Kyrenia. The competitions will last until November 9. The first stage included the Emil Mortyuk Memorial for veterans, blitz and 1-point mini-jackpot tournaments, as well as the 10th BMAB Middle East tournament. The main matches and the Wetgammon competitions are in full swing, creating incredible intensity.
More than 400 professionals and amateurs arrived from France, Germany, England, Türkiye, Iran, Italy, Denmark, Australia, Japan, Malta, Egypt, Jordan, Switzerland, Ukraine, the USA and Russia. They are competing within the walls of the Merit Park Hotel.
The tournament, led by WBF Secretary-General Marco Fornasir and WBF representative in Türkiye Arda Fındıkoğlu, draws attention in both sports and tourism circles. As always, the focus is on big prizes, unexpected matches, and friendly competition. In games where strategy, luck and skill intertwine, not only the players but also the spectators experience unforgettable moments.
“Merit Open” is not just a backgammon tournament; it is an event that significantly promotes TRNC on the international stage. Participants from around the world discover the natural beauty of Northern Cyprus and the hospitality of Merit Park Hotel. As a recognized hub of backgammon sport, Merit Park once again receives top ratings for organization, comfort and atmosphere.
The program includes not only matches but also social activities, award ceremonies and exclusive gatherings. The tournament once again unites friendship, strategy and the rhythm of the dice.
