Two Sea Turtles Found Entangled in Nets in Northern Cyprus: One Dies, One Rescued
In Northern Cyprus, two green sea turtles were discovered entangled in fishing nets placed too close to the shore. Unfortunately, one of the turtles died, while the other was rescued and is currently under the care of environmentalists.
According to the Taskent Nature Park, the incident took place yesterday in the coastal area near Kayalar. Animal welfare activists alerted rescuers through a social media post, allowing them to arrive quickly at the scene.
Sadly, one of the green sea turtles had already drowned by the time rescuers arrived. However, the other turtle was still alive, though it showed signs of near-drowning.
The rescue team immediately transported the surviving green sea turtle to the wildlife hospital for urgent care.
"We would like to thank the teams from the Camlibel police station and the TRNC Hunting Federation, as well as the wildlife protection groups, who responded swiftly to the incident. We hope to save the life of the surviving turtle and return it to its natural habitat as soon as possible," stated the nature park staff.
It has been confirmed that the fishing nets off the coast of Kayalar were set illegally and too close to the shore. Animal welfare activists have collected all necessary evidence and handed it over to the police. The investigation is ongoing.
