Mehmet Zeki Avcı, Chairman of the Association for the Prevention of Road Accidents, stated that non-operational speed cameras are negatively impacting road safety.

According to him, the fixed radar camera system was introduced in 2006 and significantly reduced road fatalities: the number of deaths due to speeding dropped from 28 per year to 15, and later to approximately 5 cases.

However, in the last two years, fines recorded by cameras have not been sent to drivers. According to Avcı, in 2025 alone, 1,418 accidents due to speeding were registered, and 18 out of 39 fatal accidents occurred for this exact reason.

He emphasized that the penalty point system previously forced drivers to comply with speed limits, as a driver loses their license upon reaching 100 points.

Avcı also warned that discussed legislative changes, which could cancel fines for violations recorded by cameras until the end of 2026, could lead to an increase in road accidents and deaths.
