Farmers in North Cyprus Count Losses After Severe Cold Spell
Farmers across North Cyprus are assessing the damage caused by an unseasonably harsh cold snap that gripped the region in recent weeks. The worst-hit areas include Güzelyurt, Famagusta, and Karpas. To help struggling farmers, the Agricultural Insurance Committee has announced plans to cover their losses.
In an interview with Cyprus Post, Mehmet Nizam, President of the North Cyprus Farmers’ Union, highlighted the devastating impact of the extreme weather. According to him, the freezing temperatures led to an increase in livestock deaths, particularly among newborn animals. Greenhouse crops also suffered significant damage due to frost and ice buildup.
“The Agricultural Insurance Committee’s Assessment Unit will evaluate the losses. Farmers will present their fields for inspection, ensuring a fair and accurate assessment. This way, the damage caused by the frost will be fully covered,” Nizam assured.
The recent cold snap also set a new temperature record for North Cyprus. On the night of February 25, 2025, Geçitkale recorded a bone-chilling -6.2°C, marking the lowest temperature in 50 years.
