Guterres confirms determination to resume Cyprus talks ahead of trilateral meeting
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres stated on September 17, 2025, in New York, during an interview on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week, his determination to pursue the resumption of Cyprus talks ten days before the scheduled trilateral meeting.
At a press conference, Guterres, in response to a question about Cyprus, emphasized that he intends to work toward resuming dialogue between the island’s parties. He said: “I am neither a pessimist nor merely an optimist; I am firmly committed to the resumption of talks.”
According to Greek Cypriot press reports, during the upcoming meeting in New York, the UN Secretary-General also plans to meet with the leaders of both sides of Cyprus.
Information on the exact date and format of the talks has not been clarified by the parties. Guterres’ statement came amid international efforts to restart the negotiation process on the island.
For residents of Northern Cyprus, this means that diplomatic efforts to resume official talks between the two sides of the island continue, and the upcoming trilateral meeting may represent the next stage of these efforts.
