Cold, outages, and frustration: residents of Northern Cyprus complain about frequent power cuts

Amid a sharp cold snap, with daytime temperatures dropping to +11°C and nighttime temperatures reaching 0°C, residents of Northern Cyprus are once again facing widespread and recurring power outages. According to citizens, in some areas electricity goes out two to three times a day, causing serious domestic and social problems.
The elderly and patients dependent on electric medical devices are particularly hard hit by these interruptions. Small businesses also suffer: entrepreneurs complain about equipment breakdowns, work stoppages, and financial losses. Residents emphasize that the problem is chronic and has remained unresolved for decades.
Citizens note that, given regular bill payments, they have the right to expect stable electricity supply. Many point to a lack of investment, production shortages, and the absence of a long-term energy strategy. Proposed solutions include the development of renewable energy sources, primarily solar and wind generation, which the island has available year-round.
According to those surveyed, power outages lead not only to domestic inconveniences—from the inability to cook food to lack of heating—but also to serious economic damage. People demand real and sustainable projects from authorities that can finally solve the energy crisis, rather than temporary measures.
