Cyprus Medical Association calls for fundamental reforms in healthcare system
The Turkish Cypriot Doctors’ Union (Kıbrıs Türk Tabipleri Birliği, KTTB) in a statement on September 14, 2025, demanded that the government implement large-scale reforms in the healthcare system, stressing the need for a tiered system, a universal health insurance scheme, and digitalization.
In the statement signed by Board Chairman Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Dalkan, it was noted that a recent sociological survey identified healthcare as one of the population’s most pressing concerns. It also pointed out that economic hardships amplify citizens’ worries about medical expenses.
KTTB emphasized that without the introduction of a tiered system (strengthening primary care, establishing referral chains, organizing preventive services), the problems will not be resolved. The association underlined that the announced public health programs and plans have not yet been properly presented.
The organization also insists on the urgent introduction of a universal health insurance system and transparent allocation of resources, considering this a necessary condition to prevent deepening inequality in access to services.
KTTB added that digitalization of healthcare is an urgent need to improve efficiency and accessibility of services. According to the organization, without a planned and sustainable approach, improvement in healthcare indicators is impossible.
