Forest roads are closed: Measures taken against fires in Northern Cyprus

In response to the emergency warning issued in the country due to abnormal heat, the authorities of TRNC have implemented measures to prevent forest fires. Picnics with fires are prohibited in Northern Cyprus, and forest roads are closed to traffic.

According to a statement from the Department of Forestry of TRNC, lighting fires, including at picnic spots with fireplaces, is prohibited. This ban will remain in effect until further notice.

The department also reminds that from May 1 to October 31, fires cannot be lit for any reason, and throwing cigarette butts from vehicles is prohibited by law. Any sightings of smoke should be promptly reported to the "177" or "199" hotlines.

In the event of a fire, the public should participate in firefighting efforts without additional calls. The mobilization of all available resources is both a legal requirement and a civic duty.

Individuals engaged in agricultural activities near forests are required to take necessary precautions against fire.

By law, garbage from dumps used by municipalities and the public must be taken to the Güngör landfill. Garbage burned, especially in summer months, poses the most serious threat to forests.

"In line with the measures taken to protect our forests from the danger of fire, it is very important for our citizens to avoid actions that may lead to fire and to heed warnings from forestry department personnel during inspections," the department's message stated.

It's worth noting that abnormally hot weather has persisted in Northern Cyprus for the second week. Several temperature records have been broken in the country. Due to excessively high temperatures, TRNC has even imposed a three-day ban on outdoor work and established a special hotline to report violations.

Additionally, due to the hot weather last week in TRNC, several major forest fires occurred. The most serious incidents happened near the Injirli Cave, as well as between the villages of Tatlısu and Mersinlik.

In the coming days, the country expects further temperature increases.
