Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot administration head Nikos Christodoulides issued a joint statement following their meeting today in the buffer zone. The two leaders discussed the opening of new crossing points, the establishment of a Youth Technical Committee, and efforts to clear landmines.

According to both leaders, today’s discussions—held as a follow-up to the informal expanded meeting in Geneva—were productive. They agreed to form a Youth Technical Committee and submit a list of its members to the United Nations by April 15. The committee will include 12 members from each side, all under the age of 35, ensuring gender balance.

Another key issue on the agenda was mine clearance. Both sides committed to exchanging information on suspected hazardous areas. This effort will be coordinated by a Greek Cypriot representative and a special Turkish Cypriot envoy.

Additionally, it was decided that:

  • The Technical Committee on the Environment will take the lead on climate change initiatives and assess the environmental impact of landmines.
  • The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage will focus on the restoration of cemeteries.

The leaders also noted that they had a "constructive exchange of views" on new crossing points and solar energy projects in the buffer zone. They have instructed their representatives to continue discussions to reach a mutually acceptable solution.

This meeting was the first official engagement since the informal 5+1 summit on the Cyprus issue, held in Geneva on March 17-18. The next round of talks between Ersin Tatar and Nikos Christodoulides is expected to take place before April 24.
