Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus, is set to visit the island at the end of May. During her first trip since being reappointed, she will hold separate meetings with the leaders of both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced over the weekend that he will meet with the UN envoy on Sunday, May 25.

He also clarified that no meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar is planned before his talks with Holguín. However, Christodoulides expressed hope that a trilateral meeting would eventually take place during her visit, emphasizing that Cyprus is now at a critical point.

“We are at a stage where key political decisions must be made—decisions that can’t be taken at the negotiator level. That’s why I hope that when Ms. Holguín arrives, the three of us will sit down together so she can share her plans, and we can present our views,” said Christodoulides.

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar also confirmed that he will meet Holguín on Monday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m.

Earlier this month, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the reappointment of Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar as his personal envoy to Cyprus. Her new mandate officially began on May 12, 2025. She now has about two months to prepare the next steps in the Cyprus peace process ahead of a planned five-party meeting in Geneva at the end of July.
