The Famagusta Women’s Centre, Mağusa Kadın Merkezi Derneği (MAKAMER), stated that wetlands must be protected as key areas in the fight against the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.

In a statement published on the occasion of 2 February — World Wetlands Day — it was noted that, according to the Ramsar Convention signed in 1971, wetlands are not only natural ecosystems but also indispensable spaces for human life, culture, and sustainable development.

MAKAMER recalled that the theme of World Wetlands Day in 2026 is “Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.” In this context, the historical role of such areas in ensuring water and food security, as well as in shaping social structures and production practices, is emphasized.

The statement says that today wetlands are strategically important zones that require protection from the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss.

It is noted that rapid urbanization, especially in cities, leads to construction, pollution, and the loss of wetland functions.

At the same time, such ecosystems:

  • reduce the risk of flooding,
  • mitigate the urban heat island effect,
  • preserve biodiversity,
  • provide public spaces for living and recreation.

In this context, the Ayluga Wetland is described as a critically important site for climate resilience and the quality of urban life.

MAKAMER recalled that on 3 January 2024, a cooperation protocol was signed between the Gazimağusa Municipality, Eastern Mediterranean University, and MAKAMER, providing for the conservation, restoration, and integration of Ayluga into the urban environment.

In conclusion, the organization emphasized that while wetland protection is a global responsibility, for urban wetlands it is an urgent necessity.

“Protecting these spaces means protecting the right to a healthy environment, the right to the city, and the life guarantees of future generations,” the statement said.
