Mayor of Lefkoşa: more than 300 people will be on duty at night due to heavy rains
In Lefkoşa, Northern Cyprus, on December 9, 2025, the Mayor of Lefkoşa Municipality, Mehmet Harmancı, announced that due to increasing rainfall, more than 300 municipal employees will work at night on continuous duty.
According to Harmancı, the municipality is completing the installation of lighting systems and floodlights to ensure uninterrupted work during nighttime. The Meteorological Service reports that the atmospheric frontal system will continue to be active until tomorrow, approximately until noon.
Harmancı appealed to residents to avoid going outside after work whenever possible, noting that if workers, civil servants, and business owners stay home at night unless absolutely necessary, it will facilitate the work of the services. He also mentioned that river levels decreased somewhat during the day but rose again later, so all precautionary measures have been taken.
The municipality reports that no additional water inflow has been recorded from the southern side so far. For residents, this means increased activity of municipal and rescue services at night and a recommendation to refrain from traveling or going outside unless absolutely necessary.
