Two men detained at Ercan Airport for cannabis brought via Kyrenia
In Northern Cyprus, at Ercan Airport on October 7, 2025, two men — F.A. (M-20) and I.Y. (M-29) — were detained during inspections by the Department for the Prevention of Narcotics and Smuggling. Illegal substances were found on them and in their luggage.
During the search, three rolled cigarettes mixed with tobacco and suspected cannabis, as well as a grinder with residue, were seized from F.A.’s backpack. Approximately 30 grams of suspected cannabis were found in I.Y.’s suitcase.
According to the suspects’ statements, they had purchased around 50 grams of the drug in Turkey and brought it to Northern Cyprus via Kyrenia, consuming part of it beforehand. The confiscated samples were sent to the State Chemical Laboratory for analysis; the investigation is awaiting the results of the expert examination.
Both detainees were brought before the court on charges of illegal possession of narcotic substances. The police stated that the investigation must continue and requested an extension of the detention period. The court ordered that the suspects remain in custody for two days; the investigation is ongoing.
